Sheriff’s Office employees bring home medals

Four employees of the Denton County Sheriff’s Office brought home medals from the Texas Police Games held in Houston last week.

Transport Deputy Barran Stone Deputy Stone won three gold medals in the Masters 35-39 age class. He ran the 100 meter dash in 12.8 seconds, the 200 meter dash in 29.7 seconds, and lifted 320 pounds in the bench press.

Detention Officer Charley Miller, who is 69 years old, earned two gold medals in the Golden Grand Masters over 55 age class. He ran the 100 meter dash in 13.2 seconds and the 200 meter dash in 29 seconds.

Miller has competed in the Masters Olympics since 1983, and has been short hurdle World Champion six times. He will travel to Italy to compete in September.

Detention Sergeant Jeremy McCombs won two silver medals in the Seniors 30-34 age class in submission wrestling and bench press, where he lifted 435 pounds.

Bailiff Judy Aaron also brought home a gold medal in the female Golden Grand Masters class by lifting 77 pounds in the bench press. She has recently taken up weight lifting and competed for the first time.

It was Deputy Stone’s seventh year to compete in the games, which are held every year and sponsored by the Texas Police Athletic Federation.

“We want to thank Sheriff Parkey and the entire Sheriff’s Office for giving us the opportunity to compete,” Deputy Stone said. “This is truly a department-wide event, because other employees have to step up and substitute on our regular shifts during the week we’re at the games.”
